As many asÂ40 percentÂof the worldâs people suffer from at least one allergic condition, and in some countries, allergies have increased by as much as 50 percent over the past decade.

Â

Researchers have warned that environmental changes such as air pollution and rising temperatures will continue to propel allergy levels to âepidemic proportions with reduced quality of life for patients, lower productivity, and increasing medical costs.â And the medical costs are nothing to sneeze at. Between medications, doctor visits and sick days from work, allergies cost Americans more than $3 billion each year. Worldwide, people spend $8 billion a year on allergy drugs alone.

For allergy sufferers who donât want to rely on medications for relief, however, chiropractic care offers a drug-free approach to treating allergy symptoms. Below is a look at why and how chiropractic can help with allergies.

How Allergies Work

What we call allergies are actually âa constellation of clinical diseasesâ that whip the immune system into an exaggerated frenzy over normally harmless substances, says medical researcherÂDave D. Ninabahen. Allergies occur when the immune system encounters an irritant and mistakes it as harmful, attacking it with far more ferocity than needed. The fiveÂmost common allergies include:

Pollen

Grass

Dust Mites

Mold

Weeds

When the irritant is inhaled, eaten or touched, the body produces specific antibodies called immunoglobulin, which trigger the release of histamines. Once released, histamines begin ravaging the body. Blood pressure drops, nearby blood vessels dilate, and the spaces between surrounding cells fill with fluid.

This inflammatory response launches a cascade of miserable symptoms, from itching and sneezing to nausea and vomiting. When the reaction occurs across the entire body, it can even be life-threatening.

Allergies, Stress and the Immune System

Doctors still donât fully understand exactly how the mechanism behind allergies works. But they have determined that stress plays a role.

âExcessive psychological stress and allergic disorder have been linked together in clinical practice for centuries,â Ninabahen said. âMany allergic conditions have long been considered psychosomatic disorders which had worsened outcomes in patients with high levels of psychosocial stress.â

The nervous system and immune system are closely linked; the study of how the intersect is known as psychoneuroimmunology, which explores the relationship between perceived stress and the bodyâs corresponding immune changes. Researchers have found that stress and allergies provoke similar inflammatory responsesâand that stress exacerbates the immune systemâs already a hyperbolic response to allergens.

Chronic stress also wears out the adrenal glands, which produce the anti-inflammatory hormone cortisol. Without enough cortisol to subdue the allergic response, symptoms can become even more severe.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help

The close relationship between the nervous system and the immune system is good news for chiropractic patients. By improving the communication between the brain and spinal cord, chiropractic care can help regulate and coordinate the bodyâs reaction to allergens.

A doctor of chiropractic can:

Strengthen the immune system.ÂMisalignments in the spineâparticularly the neckâcan disrupt the brainâs lines of communication with the rest of the body. Irritation in the upper cervical joint, for example, may compromise immunity and amplify allergic symptoms. By manipulating the joints and soft tissue, a chiropractor can restore the bodyâs alignment and re-open essential pathways between the brain and spine.

Regulate stress hormones.ÂMany allergy sufferers also have weakened adrenal glands, which means their bodies have a harder time moderating allergic reactions. Since the adrenal glands are fed directly by spinal nerves, a properly aligned spine can help regulate the amount of cortisol the body produces. This can help mitigate the severity of allergy symptoms.

Support the respiratory system.ÂLike the immune system, the respiratory system depends on an unimpeded flow of information to and from the brain. Chiropractic care keeps the pathways open, fortifying the respiratory system to better withstand allergic attacks.

Recommend dietary and lifestyle changes.ÂCertain foods and other factors in the environment can either ease or exacerbate allergy symptoms. A doctor of chiropractic can recommend changes that boost the patientâs health and comfort.

By improving communication between the immune, nervous and respiratory systems, chiropractic care can help patients weather allergy seasonâwithout relying on medications.
Headaches and Chiropractic http://www.scardinochiropractic.com/blog/dr-scardinos-health-blog/2019/03/27/headaches-and-chiropractic/ Wed, 27 Mar 2019 14:00:59 -0400
If you have a headache, youâre not alone. Nine out of 10 Americans suffer from headaches. Some are occasional, some frequent, some are dull and throbbing, and some cause debilitating pain and nausea.ÂWhat do you do when you suffer from a pounding headache? Do you grit your teeth and carry on? Lie down? Pop a pill and hope the pain goes away? There is a better alternative.

Research shows that frequent Chiropractic adjustments may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that originate in the neck.ÂA 2014 report in theÂJournal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT)Âfound that interventions commonly used in chiropractic care improved outcomes for the treatment of acute and chronic neck pain and the increased benefit was shown in several instances where a multimodal approach to neck pain had been used1. Also, a 2011ÂJMPTÂstudy found that chiropractic care, including spinal manipulation, improves migraine and cervicogenic headaches2.Â

Â

Headache Triggers

Headaches have many causes, or âtriggers.â These may include foods, environmental stimuli (noises, lights, stress, etc.) and/or behaviors (insomnia, excessive exercise, blood sugar changes, etc.).ÂAbout 5 percent of all headaches are warning signals caused by physical problems. The remaining 95 percent of headaches are primary headaches, such as tension, migraine, or cluster headaches. These types of headaches are not caused by disease; the headache itself is the primary concern.

The greatest majority of primary headaches are associated with muscle tension in the neck. Today, Americans engage in more sedentary activities than in the past, and more hours are spent in one fixed position or posture (such as sitting in front of a computer). This can increase joint irritation and muscle tension in the neck, upper back, and scalp, causing your head to ache.

What Can You Do?

The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) offers the following suggestions to prevent headaches:Â
If you spend a large amount of time in one fixed position, such as in front of a computer, on a sewing machine, typing or reading, take a break and stretch every 30 minutes to one hour. The stretches should take your head and neck through a comfortable range of motion.
Low-impact exercise may help relieve the pain associated with primary headaches. However, if you are prone to dull, throbbing headaches, avoid heavy exercise. Engage in such activities as walking and low-impact aerobics.
Avoid teeth clenching. The upper teeth should never touch the lowers, except when swallowing. This results in stress at the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) â the two joints that connect your jaw to your skull â leading to TMJ irritation and a form of tension headaches.
Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day to help avoid dehydration, which can lead to headaches.

What Can a Doctor of Chiropractic Do?

Your doctor of chiropractic may do one or more of the following if you suffer from a primary headache:

Perform chiropractic adjustments to improve spinal function and alleviate the stress on your system.

Provide nutritional advice, recommending a change in diet and perhaps the addition of B complex vitamins.

Offer advice on posture, ergonomics (work postures), exercises and relaxation techniques. This advice should help to relieve the recurring joint irritation and tension in the muscles of the neck and upper back.

Doctors of chiropractic undergo extensive training to help their patients in many ways beyond just treatment for low-back pain. They know how tension in the spine relates to problems in other parts of the body, and they can take steps to relieve those problems.Â

For more information on prevention and wellness, or to find an ACA chiropractor near you, visitÂwww.acatoday.org/patients, or follow usÂ@ACAtoday.

REFERENCES:

1.ÂBryans R, Descarreaux M, Duranleau M, et al. The article starts off by noting that more Britains are using their smartphones for accessing the Internet and other tasks. A recent British poll from YouGov noted that 44% of Britons use their mobile phone for activities other than making calls, for between 30 minutes and two hours per day.

Dr. Tim Hutchful from the British Chiropractic Association reports that leaning the head forward for extended periods of time to read the smaller screens has an adverse effect on the neck. âThe weight of an average human head is between 10 to 12 pounds (4.5 to 5.5 kilograms).â He notes that if you look at a person with an ideal posture, you should be able to draw a line from their ear through their shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle.

The article notes that when a person uses a smartphone, typically the head is leaned forward causing the effective weight of the head on the neck to be up to four times as much than if the head were held in straight-up neutral position.

Both Dr. Hutchful, and Dr. Emmanuelle Rivoal, a Paris-based physiotherapist and osteopath, report seeing more problems from the use of these devices. One of the more common terms being tossed around today is "Text Neck" which Dr. Hutchful described as a manifestation of repetitive strain injury or RSI. The article defines RSI by stating, "RSI is the name given to a group of injuries affecting the muscles, tendons, and nerves primarily of the neck and upper limbs."

Dr. Rivoal added that these types of problems were common with people who work on computers, "because they spend more than five hours a day in front of a screen." He noted that a handheld device can be even worse because the screen is smaller.

Dr. Hutchful offered some advice to avoid injury for those who use smartphones regularly. This includes things as simple as keeping smartphone use at under 40 minutes. He offers, "Keep use to a minimum, take regular breaks and look at different ways of interacting."

Â

Content Provided ByÂNow You Know, Inc.ÂÂ 2019, All Rights Reserved.

Â

Other Related Articles:Â

Osteoarthritis, Mobility, and Quality of Life Improved Under Chiropractic Care

Diet Sodas Linked to Increase in Belly Fat

Â

Follow me on social media!

FacebookÂ|ÂÂTwitter |Â Instagram
Osteoarthritis, Mobility, and Quality of Life Improved Under Chiropractic Care http://www.scardinochiropractic.com/blog/dr-scardinos-health-blog/2019/02/27/osteoarthritis-mobility-and-quality-of-life-improved-under-chiropractic-care/ Wed, 27 Feb 2019 13:39:45 -0500

Â

Â

Â

Â

Â

Â

Â

Â

Â

Â

Â

The September 17, 2015, issue of the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research carried a case study documenting an elderly woman with osteoarthritis and mobility issues being helped with chiropractic care.

The study authors begin by reporting that osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common of 140 types of arthritis conditions. The elderly are most commonly afflicted with this issue. They note that OA generally involves weight-bearing joints such as the feet, knees, hips and the spine. Joint pain with swelling and loss of joint mobility are some of the more common symptoms affecting people with OA. Common medical care for OA includes painkillers, NSAIDS, and steroidal injections.

In this case, an 82-year-old woman went to the chiropractor because she was suffering from pain and swelling in her knee joints resulting in a decrease in mobility. This problem made it difficult for her to walk and go upstairs. She also reported an irregular gait to her walk and was often in need of a walking stick. She had been suffering from this pain for over 5 years which resulted in considerable emotional stress.

A chiropractic examination was conducted consisting of leg length tests, postural analysis, the range of motion, and observation of the lower body joints. X-rays are taken of the woman's lower spine and pelvis showed spinal disc degeneration as well as mild osteoporosis.

Specific chiropractic care was begun to correct subluxations. The authors report that over a period of five and a half months, the woman was checked and adjusted when necessary twice a week.

Over the course of the care, the woman noted that she was more mobile and had an increased desire and ability to exercise. She also reported that she was experiencing other improvements in her health including better digestion, better sleep, a feeling of wellbeing, better-eating habits, improved toilet habits, and physical stamina. The woman's initial knee pain had significantly decreased and her spinal range of motion also improved.

In their discussion, the study authors explained how chiropractic care helped this woman as well as many others suffering from OA, "Chiropractic aims to optimize nervous system function thereby improving overall function of the body in response to internal and external factors. By removing interference to the nervous system via adjustments of vertebral subluxation the brain and body are able to communicate better allowing for an increase in health and wellbeing including increased movement and improved lifestyle. This is important in all age groups but is particularly important in older people as the body's susceptibility to impaired function increases."

Â

Content Provided ByÂNow You Know, Inc.ÂÂ 2019, All Rights Reserved.

Â

Â

Other Related Articles:Â

Smartphone Addicts Have Now Started Feeling the Pain

Diet Sodas Linked to Increase in Belly Fat

Â

Follow me on social media!

FacebookÂ|ÂÂTwitter |Â Instagram
Diet Sodas Linked to Increase in Belly Fat http://www.scardinochiropractic.com/blog/dr-scardinos-health-blog/2019/02/27/diet-sodas-linked-to-increase-in-belly-fat/ Wed, 27 Feb 2019 13:14:54 -0500

CBS News ran a story with the above title on March 17, 2015. Diet soda was also shown to contribute to a greater risk of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases. Metabolic syndrome is a combination of risk factors that can lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

The study named the San Antonio Longitudinal Study of Aging (SALSA), looked at 749 Mexican and European-Americans who were aged 65 and older. Researchers monitored diet soda intake, waist circumference, height, and weight over a 10 year period on the subjects. The results showed an increase in waist circumference among diet soda drinkers, that was almost triple that among seniors who did not drink diet sodas.

Science Daily also carried the story and quoted author Sharon Fowler saying, "Our study seeks to fill the age gap by exploring the adverse health effects of diet soda intake in individuals 65 years of age and older. Physical stress is the stress that is caused by something that you do to your muscles or have had happen to your muscles. For instance, job activities, posture, repetitive movements, exercise, accidents and bodily trauma are all sources of physical stress. Chemical stress is the stress that affects your muscles when you take things into your body that are toxic, like drugs or medications, food additives and environmental pollutants. Emotional stress affects the muscles by causing them to excessively contract when you are upset. Most commonly the muscles affected by emotional stress are the neck and shoulder muscles. These three stressors, physical, chemical and emotional, are the most common causes of the vertebral subluxation.

Once the vertebra (bone of the spine) has subluxated, the subluxation will affect the spinal muscle, spinal bone and spinal nerve. The spinal muscle becomes contracted and tight, and this contraction may cause pain. The spinal bone is no longer in the right joint position. This creates friction on the bone itself which can very slowly wear down the bone and cause degenerative arthritis. And finally, but most importantly, the subluxated vertebra puts pressure on the spinal nerve which disrupts the flow of nerve energy from the brain to the rest of the body. This disruption in nerve flow interferes with the brain's ability to communicate with the rest of the body. This breakdown in communication means whatever organ, tissue or cell that is on the other end of the nerve, will not function to the best of its ability. The bottom line is that the human body needs all of its organs, tissues and cells to function properly for the body to be healthy.

The only way to know if you have a vertebral subluxation is to be checked by a Chiropractor. No other health professional is licensed to locate and correct vertebral subluxations. No other healthcare professional is even looking for vertebral subluxations. And no other health professional would even know one if it saw one. No drug, lotion, massage, exercise or supplement can remove a vertebral subluxation. And you may have one or more and not even know it. Get yourself checked today and learn more about reaching your greatest health potential.
What to look forward to and how to contact me. http://www.scardinochiropractic.com/blog/dr-scardinos-health-blog/2011/02/16/what-to-look-forward-to-and-how-to-contact-me/ Wed, 16 Feb 2011 13:06:41 -0500
Hello friends! It is a wonderful Wednesday here in Newtown and we are ready to help you and your loved ones towards a healthier life! I am planning to use these blog posts to spread the word about this fantastic health creating Chiropractic Lifestyle!! For many the Chiropractic Lifestyle starts with the most important basic step of keeping your spinal column motioning properly and free from interferences! The brain and nervous system control and coordinate each and every function of the body! There is not one thing happening in your body right now that is not being controlled or coordinated by the brain through the spinal cord. If we were to create a computer (even with today's microchip technology) that did everything the brain did in a 24 hour period, It would have to be as tall as the Empire State Building, as big as Houston Texas and water cooled by the Hudson River!!!! Stresses caused by physical, chemical and emotional events can effect our spine leading to miscommunications from the brain to the rest of the organs, glands, muscles and body systems. These may be big events like auto accidents, slips or repetitive work habits. The real culprits however, are the small things we do each day. Fender benders with no pain, fall and catch ourselves is sometimes worse than falling and breaking a bone. Chemical stresses like sugar, artificial sweeteners, nicotine, caffeine and processed foods. These things change the way we sleep, tax our adrenals, relax or tighten muscles. The last and most often overlooked stress is emotional. Worry, rushing, fear! Teenagers, parents, bosses, teachers, cell phones ringing, traffic jams, deadlines! These things have the greatest effect on us. They tighten muscles, change breathing habits and upset sleep. These stresses combined can have devastating effects on our health, structure, wellness and immune system. The research that correlates Chiropractic Wellness with a decrease in these dangers is growing every day and I plan on sharing them with you. Most of us go about our lives ignoring or covering up these little warning signs or simply passing them along as normal par for the course events. But believe me I see it every day in my practice. By the time someone feels the pain, gains the weight, hears the diagnosis, the problem has been there for a long time. It would benefit you to get a Chiropractic checkup as soon as possible since many of these misalignments are symptom free until it is a much bigger problem and you may not even know they are there. If you are currently under Chiropractic Care then good for you!! Keep up the good work!

There are other steps included in living a healthy lifestyle and research shows that people who incorporate Chiropractic Wellness often will include these other things as well. We will discuss these in future posts. If you have linked onto this blog then chances are you are already on my website. If you have any questions there is a contact us tab at the top categories. Our website also has hundreds of articles concerning all kinds of health and wellness topics feel free to browse it often. In the meanwhile if you have a question let me know. If you know anyone who would benefit from meeting me then refer them over. Remember consultations are always free and on me. Also, remember that I will never move forward with any case if I am not confident that I can be of help. Have a great day!

In Health,

Dr. Gary Scardino
A little about me http://www.scardinochiropractic.com/blog/dr-scardinos-health-blog/2011/02/15/a-little-about-me/ Tue, 15 Feb 2011 18:50:02 -0500
Dr. Gary Scardino is a Chiropractor, Clinical Nutritionist utilizing Nutrition Response Testing and Whole Food Supplements, Certified Pose Running Coach and has Diplomate Status in Addiction Recovery.
